On March 3 2025, we had the privilege of sitting down with Dr. Vanus Taepaisitphongse, Ex- CEO of the Betagro Group and respected Thai business leader. In this thoughtful interview, Dr. Vanus shared his personal journey, insights on leadership, and his reflections on responsibility, ethics, and family legacy in shaping one of Thailand’s leading agri-food companies.
A Journey Rooted in Family and Responsibility
Dr. Vanus’s journey began in Saraburi Province, growing up in a family deeply rooted in agriculture and business. After completing his MBA in California, he returned to Thailand and started his career at TISCO and Citi Bank. But soon after, family responsibility called him back to Betagro—a decision that shaped his life’s work.
“I didn’t feel forced,” he reflected. “It was more about responsibility and doing what’s right. I always tell young people—look at your family business first. Understand it. You might find that what you’re looking for is right there.”
Since joining Betagro in 1985, Dr. Vanus has been instrumental in growing the company while staying true to its core values of ethics, responsibility, and integrity.
Leadership Rooted in Ethics and Purpose
When asked about his leadership style, Dr. Vanus described himself as a facilitator—supporting others’ dreams rather than commanding from the front. “I’m not the kind of leader who says, ‘Let’s conquer that hill.’ I listen, support, and help others achieve their goals.”
A notable achievement during his leadership period was Betagro’s bold decision not to use growth-enhancing substances like ractopamine, despite the industry's rampant usage. “It wasn’t easy. We were criticized. But I’m proud we stood our ground. Sometimes leadership is about making difficult decisions because they’re right—not because they’re easy.”
For Dr. Vanus, business and ethics are inseparable. His belief in doing the right thing—whether in food safety or community development—has been a guiding principle throughout his career.
Embracing Social Responsibility and Community Work
Beyond business, Dr. Vanus is deeply committed to social development. He serves on multiple university boards, including CMKL University, and is involved with the Program Management Unit on Area Based Development (PMU A/บพท.), which supports farmers and rural communities.
“One of the projects I’m most passionate about is empowering small communities,” he shared. “It’s not just about charity. It’s about building capacity and resilience—ensuring people have the tools to thrive.”
Dr. Vanus believes that true leadership extends beyond the boardroom. “If a business only benefits itself, what’s the point? We have a responsibility to help society.”
The Role of Mindfulness in Leadership
A firm believer in mindfulness, Dr. Vanus draws inspiration from Buddhist principles. “I’ve learned that awareness—knowing what you’re doing and why—is vital. Many people live their whole lives without realizing what they’re truly doing.”
Through years of practice and conversations with mentors, he has embraced mindfulness as a way of leading—staying grounded, reflective, and conscious of his actions and decisions.
Words of Wisdom for Future Leaders
For younger generations navigating their own paths, Dr. Vanus offers this advice: “Stay rooted in what’s right. Don’t chase trends without understanding yourself first. You don’t need to have everything figured out—but you do need to be responsible and ethical in whatever you do.”
He added, “Remember—success isn’t just about growth or profits. It’s about how many people you lift up along the way.”
Looking Ahead
Today, Dr. Vanus remains an influential figure in business, education, and social impact. As he reflects on his journey, his message is clear—lead with integrity, stay true to your values, and always remember the importance of community.
Through his work with Betagro and beyond, Dr. Vanus continues to embody the values of ethical leadership, social responsibility, and lifelong learning—setting an inspiring example for future generations.
