Introduction to the AiCE Program

The Artificial Intelligence and Computer Engineering (AiCE) program at CMKL University is built on a commitment to building competency. We do this through a custom-crafted curriculum designed to develop a deep understanding of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and the many industries in which AI is increasingly relevant and impactful.

Curriculum and Learning Pathways

The curriculum is designed to provide students with a flexible learning pathway, crafted to match their interests and goals. AiCE emphasizes theoretical knowledge in mathematics, science, AI, and computer engineering without leaving out practical skills such as human-based design, entrepreneurship, presentation, and other soft skills. With the new "Competency-Based" curriculum, classes are not solely concentrated on knowledge and tests but on how much the students can apply, analyze, evaluate, and create using the knowledge.

Undergraduate Research and Development (URD) Projects

Like Andrew Carnegie, one of the founders of  the Carnegie Steel Company, once said, "My heart is in the work." AiCE students devote time to working on the URD projects (Undergraduate Research and Development), building skills and experience throughout the entirety of the program. The URD project consists of 3 tracks:

  • Year 1: Entrepreneurship and Innovation
  • Year 2: AI for Society
  • Year 3 & 4: Experiential Learning Program

In the program's first month, first-year students begin working on a chosen project in groups, preparing them for the following years. As second-year students, they will tackle real-world problems through internships and create solutions for people in need.

Experiential Learning Program (XP)

The XP program grants third-year students the opportunity to do an internship with industrial partners, study or work on research with universities or research institutions overseas, or conduct research on AI-related topics through partnerships with the AiE institute (CMKL, Mahidol University, KMITL, Khon Kaen University, Chiang Mai University, and Prince of Songkla University) and international collaborators. Third—and fourth-year students can engage in our Experiential Learning Program (XP). This provides academic credit for internships, travel programs, and self-driven research.

Competency-Based Learning Approach

Competencies are sets of topics and skills that students can learn. The program has six core pillars: Artificial Intelligence, Human-Centered Design, Scalable Systems, Cybersecurity, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and Software Engineering. Students can request credit transfer for Mathematics, Science, Communication and Presentation, and Humanities pillars available through the AIEI university network. Additionally, students are graded on their adaptability, empathy, ethics, proactiveness, professionalism, teamwork, and self-learning, accessed through project advisors, instructors, mentors, program staff, and the students themselves.

Competency-based learning offers a high degree of customization and flexibility, enabling students to pursue their dreams and aspirations while providing them with the essential skills and knowledge to complete their research projects. Students' grades are assessed by demonstrating their conceptual and procedural understanding of the knowledge and skills the competency offers.

A1CE

A1CE is a powerful tool that allows students to view their personalized schedule, catch up on announcements, explore competencies, and review recommended study roadmaps for different interest tracks to tailor their learning path. In the case that the student hasn't completed the skills associated with the competency, they can always resume where they left off in the previous semester and continue working towards achieving the mastery level they desire.

The Future

The world changes fast, and therefore, students must adapt and evolve faster. CMKL prizes flexible and customizable educational design, as students will require this adaptability to thrive in the modern world. Our program is designed to foster graduates who can solve real problems for real people outside a textbook by seamlessly blending theory with practical experience. With the modern method of education like the Competency-Based curriculum, this program aims to produce students who are well-versed in the complexities of AI and computer engineering and adept at applying their knowledge to solve real-world challenges, making them highly valuable in the global tech industry. If you are interested in learning more about the program or wish to talk to a student, we are happy to invite you to our upcoming open house!
