Paving the Way for Healthier Posture Habits with PostureBuddy

Poor posture has become a significant issue in today’s lifestyle, affecting individuals across all age groups. The increasing reliance on desk jobs and sedentary activities has led to widespread posture-related problems such as hunchback, forward head posture, and rounded shoulders. These issues not only harm physical health but also lead to chronic pain, reduced productivity, and long-term musculoskeletal disorders. To address this pressing problem, the PostureBuddy project seeks to revolutionize posture correction by leveraging advanced technology and a user-centric design.
From interviews with team members, it became clear that the project’s foundation lies in a deep understanding of the limitations of traditional posture correction tools. Most conventional solutions rely on static devices, like braces, or subjective self-monitoring, which fail to provide personalized, real-time feedback. This gap inspired the PostureBuddy team to create an innovative, adaptive solution to empower users to take control of their posture and overall health.

The PostureBuddy system comprises four key components: a wearable device, a cloud-based machine learning system, a mobile application, and a behavioral change framework. The wearable device, designed for comfort and daily use, features IMU sensors to collect real-time posture data, including spine curve angles, shoulder displacement, and chin alignment. According to the team, the device will integrate into the user’s routine, providing accurate data for posture monitoring without disrupting daily activities.
The collected data will be processed in real-time using a cloud-based machine learning system, hosted on platforms like AWS SageMaker. Team members discussed how they are using RNN-based models to classify posture deviations such as hunchback, forward head posture, and rounded shoulders. The system also performs predictive analysis, helping users understand the long-term impacts of their posture habits. The planned mobile application will serve as the user interface, offering real-time feedback, progress tracking, and gamified elements like badges and leaderboards to encourage consistent engagement.

A standout aspect of the project is its focus on behavioral change and habit formation. The team emphasized that the goal is not just to correct posture temporarily but to promote sustainable habits. Personalized feedback and motivational tools will empower users to develop self-regulated posture awareness, addressing the root causes of posture-related issues. This approach distinguishes PostureBuddy from traditional solutions that often rely on external devices without encouraging long-term behavioral change.

The project is still in its early stages, and the team is focused on developing a hardware prototype and backend infrastructure as the next step. They highlighted the challenges of working with stakeholders, including professors from other universities, to refine sensor design and receive technical advice on choosing the right technology. Additionally, later down the road, they said,
“We also hope to involve behavioral experts to validate the product’s efficacy in real-world scenarios.”

As the project progresses, the team envisions expanding capabilities by enhancing machine learning models, integrating with other health devices, and scaling the system for broader accessibility. Data security and scalability are also priorities for the backend architecture.
PostureBuddy represents a promising step forward in addressing posture-related issues. Through continued collaboration and development, the team hopes to create a solution that has a lasting impact on personal health and well-being !
