Carlos Escapa: AI for Empathy, Harnessing Technologies in an Age of AI to Build a Healthier World

On January 28, 2025, CMKL University proudly welcomed Carlos Escapa for the CMKL Distinguished Lecture Series, and what an inspiring and enlightening session it was! Carlos, a trailblazer in artificial intelligence, captivated the audience with his thought-provoking talk titled "Harnessing Technologies in an Age of AI to Build a Healthier World."

Carlos didn’t just share technical insights—he delivered a compelling call to action, urging technologists to integrate empathy and compassion into the design of AI systems. As AI continues to revolutionize industries, Carlos emphasized that true innovation goes beyond efficiency—it lies in understanding and addressing human needs with sensitivity and care.

One highlight of his talk was a real-world example that perfectly illustrated this philosophy: the transformative AI-driven solution for the UK’s Department of Work and Pensions whitemail application (Civilsserviceaward, 2024). With over 25,000 letters received daily, many from individuals seeking urgent help, the traditional manual processing system was overwhelmed, leading to delayed responses and, in some cases, critical failures.

The DWP's Intelligent Automation team tackled this challenge head-on by creating an AI solution architecture that streamlines the entire process. Using text extraction, language analysis, and thematic detection, the system efficiently processes the influx of letters.

At the heart of this innovation are two advanced AI models:

  • Bart CNN (N/A, 2024), condenses letters into concise summaries, which increases the semantic density of the text.
  • Bart MNLI (N/A, 2024), is a classifier that identifies and prioritizes urgent cases, such as individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts or orphans in dire need of support.

This intelligent system ensures that high-priority cases are flagged immediately, allowing teams to take action on the same day. By revolutionizing how public services address critical situations, DWP, Accenture, and AWS have shown that AI, when combined with empathy, has the power to save lives. The lecture left the audience deeply inspired. Carlos’s ability to bridge cutting-edge technology with human-centric solutions offered a glimpse into the transformative potential of AI to tackle global challenges. His vision exemplifies the role AI can play in building a healthier, more compassionate world.
